You don’t have to own a 3D printer to get something printed. Because you don’t have to pay to make a factory mold, 3D printing services allow you print nearly any object, even if you don’t have the supplies. Just create your design, send in the blueprints, and check the mail. There are countless different printers out there, but there are just a few of the more popular ones you can choose from.
Shapeways
We’ve mentioned Shapeways before, and for good reason. Shapeways feels like Etsy for the printing world. You can design your own object to be printed, create a product to sell, or browse other user’s designs. So yes, you can finally start selling that awesome new phone case you dreamed up, and you don’t even have to make any in advance.
If you’re just getting into the 3D printing world, Shapeways is a great service. You can work off of one of their creation apps, adding your own features to a premade design; or, if you’re feeling up to it, you can check out their selection of free 3D modeling software. If you don’t want to make your own design, you can also get in touch with artists you like, and potentially commission a design.
The only downside to products from Shapeways is that they can get a little pricey, depending on the materials you want to use. Plastics are always going to be cheaper, while glass and other materials will increase the pricetag on your object.
Sculpteo
As far as 3D printing services go, Sculpteo is fairly similar to Shapeways. The site focuses more on printing your designs, and less on selling them to other users. However, you can still open a shop in their marketplace if you have something that you just know other people are going to love.
Sculpteo also has a variety of modeling tools that let you work from a basic concept. You can print text, images, or basic shapes, with your own custom design added on. Of course, you can also upload any 3D design that you already have, but these tools are a great place to start.
Pokono
Pokono has dubbed itself “the world’s easiest making system”, and their setup is definitely streamlined. Their baisc 3D printing service is a simple as uploading a design, choosing a material, and hitting submit. What’s interesting is that Pokono actually offers a subscription service, which reduces the overall cost of printing and gives you access to more features. If you’re going to be printing a lot of object, the subscription is definitely the way to go.
The site also has a marketplace where you can purchase and sell your designs. Prices vary wildly, ranging from free (aside from materials) to hundreds of dollars; make sure to check that price tag before you fall in love with a design.
Choosing a 3D Printing Service
Consider uploading your design to multiple 3d printing services, and checking the price differences before you order. Different printers handle designs differently, so check all of your options before you settle on a favorite. You’ll also want to factor in shipping costs, and decide whether or not you want to sell your design online.
When you’re looking for a printer, keep in mind that there’s probably a local 3D printing service in your home town. A closer service means less shipping time and overall costs, with the added benefit of supporting your local economy. Of course, smaller printers can also have a greater turnaround time, so do your research before making a final decision.
